16.10.2011 20:21:48 - Training and development is an area that triggers many issues for a corporation in the face of economic turmoil. When it comes to cutting costs, training and development is often compromised by many businesses in favor of other profit-focus activities. However, training and development is crucial for the survival and growth of a company, large or small.
(live-PR.com) - Training and development is a large area encompassing indise corpovidual, organizational, functional as well as societal realms. Many would argue training and development is an issue of chicken and egg. However, those corporations which have experienced the benefits of training and development will hold on to the belief that training and developing their employees cannot be compromised even in times
of struggle. They may shrink their training budget but they would not stop their development program totally.
Mr Jimmy Ong, the General Manager of Training Network Incorporated (TNI Malaysia), believes that only through training and development will a company, large or small, survive and grow through tough times. ‘Due to the massive restructuring, re-engineering and the myriad of changes taking place in these uncertain economic conditions, now is the opportune time for organizations to reposition themselves through wise management of training and development in order to survive and grow.’ Mr Jimmy Ong explains.
Indeed, it is often tempting for a struggling company to channel their training budget into other more profit-generating activities, hoping these will bring the company through difficult times. What most companies do not realize is that the compromise often brings about the reverse effect and the situation often worsens. Such action is usually perceived and interpreted as a negative thing of the company by the employees. The consequence of this is often lower morale of the employee and their confidence in the company begins to falter. Training and development during tough times frequently bring about the unexpected outcome of motivating the employees and strengthen the dedication of the workforce.
‘When a company is willing to devote resources to train their human assets even during tougher times, the employees see themselves as valuable in the eyes of their employer, which indirectly motivates the employees.’ Mr Jimmy Ong shares his insight on corporations which hold strong to training and development.
Training and development is not a short-term action. It is a long term dedication that will bring about long-lasting results. Corporations which make training and development their policy will reap rewards in due course.
