Economist Xavier Sala i Martín and President Imma Tubella assert the role of the university in confronting the crisis

27.11.2009 20:11:21 The economist Xavier Sala i Martín and the president of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), Imma Tubella, emphasized today the role of the university in overcoming the crisis and creating a new pattern of economic growth. Sala i Martín and Tubella participated in the opening of SCOP 2009, the standing conference that brings together as of this Friday in Barcelona some 80 presidents and executive directors of virtual and distance universities throughout the world. The meeting focuses on the search for formulas that allow the quality of university services to be maintained during the crisis and, at the same time, contribute to overcoming the economic and financial difficulties that society is going through.
(live-PR.com) - Barcelona - During her speech, Imma Tubella underlined that “if we believe that the world needs a new pattern for growth and that the university is a powerful instrument of innovation and a factor of well-being, it is time that we make educational excellence a priority”. On his part, Xavier Sala i Martín, charged with delivering the inaugural speech, analyzed
how the imbalances caused by the present financial crisis are being resolved with new imbalances and he proposed overcoming our difficulties through commitment to competitiveness and innovation. “The emergence of new ideas requires a new kind of education. We need universities that encourage critical and business spirit”, he pointed out.
The ICDE Standing Conference of Presidents, SCOP, organized by the UOC and by the ICDE (International Council for Open and Distance Education), was inaugurated today by the Minister of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise of the Catalan government, Josep Huguet, the president of the ICDE, Frits Pannekoek, and the president of the UOC, Imma Tubella.
The celebration of SCOP 2009 in Barcelona is framed within the celebrations of the 15th anniversary of the UOC and comes at a time in which the crisis presents great challenges to the university community. Presidents from countries as diverse as China, Israel, the United States or Nigeria will try during these two days to respond to challenges such as guaranteeing and measuring the quality of open and distance education, in full expansion and considered an essential tool for offering educational opportunities to the global population in the 21st century.
