Taking the car abroad is a popular thing these days, especially as travelling is expensive, but are drivers from the UK taking a chance. The DVLA are not allowed to pass out drivers details that are connected to a number plate, yet thousands of fines reach UK drivers.

There is nothing worse that
returning from a wonderful holiday to find a fine on your doormat, especially when the driver does not recall doing anything wrong, but this is happening more and more with drivers receiving fines from Spain and Italy for driving offences such as entering congestions zones and illegally parking.

However, if the DVLA are not allowed by law to give out the details of a driver to a foreign agency just because they have the driver’s car registration number, how are these agencies getting the vehicle owners details?

It ‘s simple really, all they do is employ a UK based agent like Euro Parking Collection (EPC), they contact the DVLA and when the details are given over, they pass them over to the foreign agencies who then send out the fines.

EPC legal manager Stuart Hendry said, "If you don't pay a notified fine, the legislation is in place to enforce these fines in most countries, but it's a question of practicality and whether it's financially worth pursuing." That suggests you can safely ignore it - but beware that it may be treated as a criminal offence and your details held in the country concerned. Ultimately, your car could be seized on your return.

Tim Shallcross, head of technical policy at IAM Motoring Trust, says: "If I knew I'd committed an offence abroad, even unwittingly, and I wanted to return to that country later, personally I wouldn't chance it. I'd pay the fine."

UK drivers should also be aware that there are many frauds being carried out too, these run in a similar manner.
