(live-PR.com) - Shin splints are commonly known as tibial stress syndrome. Mostly soccer players, basketball players and especially, runners suffer from shin splints. Overload on the tibia (shinbone) and on attached tissues connected to it gives rise to the pain of shin splints. This type of condition arises when athletes work very hard or for a long time, or if they suddenly
add extra hours of exercise into their daily routine. The pain of shin splints leads to weakness in the lower leg muscle, a part that is also named as tibialis anterior.
Various physical therapies and medical treatments are available as a cure for shin splints. But the foremost thing one should follow is to take proper rest and limit the stress or load to the shin area. It is important to take advice from a physician or physio to evaluate the seriousness of the injury and to get a recommendation of possible treatment.
Acupuncture is one of the most popular treatments used by athletes. It is an effective method for getting fast relief from shin splints. It can be applied as soon as the symptoms of shin splints begin to occur. Acupuncture is a very useful way of healing, reducing pain, enhancing local microcirculation and attracting white blood cells to the area. It also provides faster relief from swelling.
In 2002, researchers carried out a random experiment to find out the usefulness of acupuncture in healing shin splints. Around forty athletes suffering with shin splints were categorized into three treatment groups, which were acupuncture treatment, Standard sports medicine treatment and a combined group who were given both.
All patients were given two treatments every week continuously for three weeks. Researchers observed that group treated with acupuncture and the combined treatment group were more at rest and were having lower pain in the shin's whilst undertaking activities.
Overall, it was found that the effectiveness of acupuncture is 72.5%, the combined treatment is 54.5% and standard sports medicine is 46.5%. So it was found that acupuncture gives the best results for the pain of shin splints.
Patient with shin splints should seek advice from a primary care physician, prior to make an attempt for any acupuncture therapy. If the physician recommends that acupuncture can be helpful for you, then you should look for a licensed massage acupuncturist that is nationally certified with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Bodywork and Massage.
