Prez Mr Lee to initiate New Asia
24.01.2010 06:28:42 Mr Lee Mayung-Bak is arriving in New Delhi on Sunday on a four day visit to India.During his stay in New Delhi he will hold delegation level talks with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Monday.
(live-PR.com) - During his visit to India from Sunday to Wednesday, Lee is to focus on strengthening his "New Asia Initiative," which calls for a closer partnership between Korea and its neighbors, thus initiating the groundwork for closer economic ties with the rapidly developing economy.
The two sides are likely to sign agreements in the areas of information technology and peaceful usage of
space technology after the talks. The South Korean President will hold discussions with the External Affairs Minister Mr S M Krishna and exchange views with the captains of industry. He will call on the President, Vice-President.
The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mrs Sushma Swaraj and UPA Chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi will also exchange views with them on mutual and international issues of common concern.
Civil Nuclear cooperation will be high on the agenda of talks between the visiting South Korean President and Indian Leaders. This is likely to pave the way for signing of civil-nuclear deal.
Lee has pledged to increase economic contributions to developing countries in Asia and promote cultural exchanges based on the growing popularity of Korean dramas and pop songs.South Korea is seeking to sign free trade agreements with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),and also with other Asia-Pacific countries as part of its efforts to further regional economic cooperation.
According to Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman, the comprehensive economic partnership agreement has enhanced the partnership in this are as bi-lateral trade which was at 15.5 million US dollars has grown by 15 per cent this year.
India has granted a crucial environment clearance to a Korean steel major ahead of his visit to India. Posco's 12 billion dollar steel project is the single largest FDI in the country and the clearance was granted on 29th of last month.
South Korea supported India during its discussions with the IAEA and NSG to seek a clean waiver for India for civil nuclear commerce.Gautam Bimbawale, Joint Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, said on the state visit,“We are moving ahead with the project. Both the Central and State governments are committed to the project. But we would like to move ahead mush faster,” Indian diplomatic channels has sent signals that it is committed to the project by giving environmental clearance to part of the land allotted to the company, Posco.
Mr. Lee had wanted his visit to coincide with the beginning of the work on the site but this was not possible due to continuing agitation against land acquisition.
