Congress president Sonia Gandhi said, “Now this is really not an occasion for a political speech, but elections to the state assembly will take place in a couple of months,” Gandhi said during her public rally, held on the occasion of the 50th year of the state’s liberation from Portuguese rule.
“I do hope that people of Goa will place their trust and confidence in the Congress party so that forces of social peace and harmony can be strengthened,” Gandhi said, adding that Goa was a “shining beacon” of social admit.Further she added,Goa was liberated on December 19, 1961, and the then PM of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru expressed happiness that with Goa's liberation, the freedom of India became complete. Gandhi too recalled bowing to Goan sentiment, Rajiv Gandhi gave Goa full-fledged statehood. Soinia Gandhi said, "I salute Goa and Goans for their spirit of enterprise, joy and adventure. The Congress party had the privilege of being part of Goa's transformation. The progress of Goa is the achievement of the people of Goa."
