(live-PR.com) - - Bioring SA Switzerland: Otto H. Hess, MD, FESC, FAHA, Professor of Cardiology, Swiss Cardiovascular Centre, University of Bern Switzerland, is collaborating with Bioring SA for the development of a new biodegradable coronary stent: "I believe that Bioring SA has made a very important new step which may influence the stent technology in an important way."
Bioring SA is a Switzerland-based company which has developed a technology platform in the field of biodegradable polymers. Bioring's expertise is based on the control of the biodegradation period and on the inflammatory process of a family of polymers, which may be either enhanced or diminished.
After preliminary studies including animal testing, Bioring SA has already demonstrated the feasibility of its technique in the arterial system. The company is presently developing coronary stents for animal implants. "This new product in development may strongly influence the future of the company," said Raymond Andrieu, CEO and founder of Bioring SA. "We are also active in urology. We are actually performing a clinical study for urethral biodegradable stents, and actively working in the field of FUI with a new concept based on our technology."
The company was created in 2000 and the first product on the market is the Kalangos(R) Biodegradable Ring, used in cardiac surgery for mitral and tricuspid repair techniques in both paediatric and adult populations. The Kalangos(R) Ring is marketed in Europe and countries accepting CE mark approval (2005). It is the only product approved for paediatric valve repair. Over a thousand patients have already been treated successfully.
